Carbon Credit Strategy

Carbon trading helps control carbon dioxide pollution by providing economic incentives for reducing emissions. Carbon credits contribute to a multi-billion dollar market each year. In partnership with the Pinchot Institute, GoodLands provides organizations strategic planning to measure their carbon impact and maximize their carbon market revenues.

Carbon Credit Strategy provide communities an emissions inventory, plan for their carbon strategy and  evaluations of compliance with cap-and-trade obligations. GoodLands carbon trading services are geographically limited in scope at this time to select regions int he United States and Canada.

Ecosystems services

Ecosystems services, such as pollination, blue infrastructure, and decomposition help drive our economic systems by supporting agriculture, promoting soil health, and reducing water pollution and gray infrastructure costs. These services are provided by nature for free! Tapping into ecosystems services involves combinations of active land use and management changes  (such as green site-engineering for stormwater, or implementing a forest management strategy), and passive strategies {such as no-mow areas, or reducing or eliminating pesticide use when possible). GoodLands Ecosystems Service Evaluations provides an overview of the most valuable ecosystems services and potentials on your properties and template recommendations for strategies that will help you maximize their benefit

Clean Energy Master Planning Products
Reducing CO2 emissions requires increasing clean energy production and reducing current energy usage. GoodLands Clean Energy Master Planning assesses your organization’s properties for current energy usage and identifies on which properties small steps, such as changing light bulbs, will result in the most significant cost savings and energy use reductions. We then connect the plans to Catholic Climate Covenant‘s enegery program or Sustainable Endowments Institute to help you retrofit these properties and establish green revolving funds for future projects. We also reveal which properties are most suitable for wind power production, solar production, and micro-hydropower generation.

Food Security Planning Products

GoodLands food security planning falls into two categories — planning in areas with robust infrastructure (such as the United States) and planning in low- and middle-income countries. We  assess how climate change may be impacting food security in the area  and help identify properties in food deserts and lands that have high agricultural potential.

Solutions Across Scales

We work across scales, from individual properties to global planning. At each scale we leverage community-driven design, technology, and planning competencies while using a unique, prorietary approach that integrally connects social, financial, and environmental needs and goals. We develop data, analytics, software, platforms, and lead workshops with communities to help them understand, articulate, and meet their goals. To implement programs, designs, and plans we work with local partners including, but not limited to, financial supporters, engineering firms, land trusts, scientists, nursries, real estate firms, insurance companies, aligned non-profits, and farmers as needed and appropriate. Please click each scale to learn more and see case studies of our work.

The Parcel Scale includes work on individual properties, such as parishes, monasteries, convents, homes, and small schools. These typically have one substaintial building and are less than fifteen acres. We have designed individual gardens, within a parcel, and are capable of delivering this type of work.

The Campus Scale include hospitals, colleges and universities, large monasteries and convents, and retreat centers. This scale and the parcel scale interchange similar approaches and can overlap. A campus typically has more than one substantial building (excluding sheads, etc.) and is > 15 acres.

The Regional Scale includes work with dioceses, provinces, regions, and counties. This moves away from the use of basic ecological Landscape Design and Architecture techniques towards an approach influenced by computational landscape architecture, urban planning, conservation planning, and smart cities. These projects typically involve >10 properties and >10,000 acres.

The Confrence Scale includes work at country-wide, episcopal conference, and continental scales. Similarly to the Regional Scale, this work can vary from being high-resolution, looking at details down to the building-scale on each property and maintaining this in a database, scaling out to lower-resolution planning based on real asset location as points.

The Global Scale looks at entire religious orders, sectors, global organizations, and networks around the world. This scale includes the generation and aggregation of new data for maps with dioceses, countries, provinces, and parishes. In 2016 we completed the first global map of the Catholic Church in history and continue to update this and leverage it for our partners goals.

We work to understand our clients needs and values and coherently address these as a whole with property management.

We take information products to the next level by delivering a powerful cloud-based platform that helps your organization stay on track, improve your approach, and measure the impact of our property solutions.

Our platform delivery system provides you a simple system of records for continuing property management and a system of engagement for your organization and stakeholders.

Reports and analytics are all delivered in accessible written and visual formats. All data behind reports is reusable and complies with ISO formats. We hold high data quality and meta-data standards so that you can understand the information you have honestly and can ensure it is being used appropriately.

Our cloud-based solution provides a platform to simply bring together key partners for implementation and reduces work redundancy across organizations, making it simpler for your organization to put plans into action.

GoodLands has the largest database of Catholic geospatial data, and we are the initiators of the Catholic Community Spatial Data Infrastructure as part of the Vatican Arts and Technology Council initiative affiliated with the Holy See. For pre-screened Catholic-affiliate clients, access to our existing data can significantly reduce time and costs for projects.

Operational Strategies

Coherence from the parcel scale to the global: Enable coherent communication across scales along with project evolution and improvement on each scale.

Top-Down Planning, Bottom-Up Community Involvement: Work synchronously from the top to reveal opportunities and facilitate high-impact changes with communities on the ground.

Connecting existing networks to get from analysis to action: Cultivate and activate a network of resources already in the community that can help educate about suggestions and make landscape changes.

Transference: Internal reapplication of basic models and pre-assembled frameworks and theoretical reapplication of frameworks by other organizations. Spatial Data Infrastructure reduces redundancy and increases simple geospatial data transference among Catholic communities.

Accessibility: Accessible project operations, accessible data analyses, and simple educational materials that make landscape ecology, conservation, and geodesign approachable for the general public.
